Cossack Art Award draw to a close

After three weeks of public exhibition and programming, more than 8200 patrons through the door, and nearly $100,000 in artwork sales, the 2016 Cossack Art Awards have drawn to a close.

Wrapping up another successful year celebrating the best in Australia art, North Fremantle artist Alicia Gorey has been announced as the Horizon Power’s People’s Choice Award Winner for her painting My Turn.

More than 280 people entered this year’s awards vying for the top prize which was taken out by Yallingup artist Mary-Lynn Stratton for her piece Radiant Mirage – an imaginative and unique depiction of the Pilbara landscape.

The Cossack Art Awards is presented by the City of Karratha and Rio Tinto.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said this year’s exhibition was yet another showcase of exceptional quality work and exciting community events.

“We have had another brilliant year at Cossack with three weeks of exhibition and a jam packed program of events for the community. More than 280 artworks were on display this year representing a diverse mix of art and talent from across the Country,” Cr Long said.

“Congratulations to all the artists and everyone involved for making this year’s Cossack Art Awards another stand out event,” Cr Long added.

Rio Tinto general manager Rail Operations Zara Fisher said this year’s Cossack Art Awards was a fantastic event, with some unique and inspiring artworks adorning the walls of the Bond Store, creating a colourful and creative exhibition, along with a quality program of activities and events to bring the exhibition to life and engage the whole community.

“Congratulations to the City of Karratha for their continued commitment to this iconic event,” Ms Fisher said.

“Thank you also to the many artists, community groups, organisations and local businesses who helped deliver an amazing and engaging program of activities.”
